Before her recent move to sunny California, Dr. Misra held the positions of General Surgeon, and was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at McMaster University. She was Co-Director of the Bariatric Surgery program, Associate Director for Center of Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) and CTU Director for Senior Medical Students at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, ON, Canada. She was the Director and Co-Founder of the Canadian Institute of Bariatric Options (CIBO). This is one of the first Canadian comprehensive multidisciplinary outpatient weight loss programs that involves surgical, medical, psychological, nutritional, and fitness programs. Dr. Misra has an impressive educational background that includes completion of the Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgical Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA in 2005. Since completion of her training, she has performed thousands of advanced laparoscopic, bariatric, and endoscopic procedures. She is Board Certified to practice General Surgery in both Canada and the USA. |
ABOUT DR. MONALI MISRA
Dr. Misra has been the recipient of a number of Honors and Awards, some of which are the “Most Distinguished Poster Presentation” awarded at S.A.G.E.S. (Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) Conference, Denver, CO, Mar. 2004. The Third Place Award at the Annual Surgical Residents Research Day, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Oct. 2001, Dr. Misra was on the Dean’s Honor List ranking in the Top 5% of students in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan in 1995. Dr Misra was also awarded the Canada Scholarship in Science and Engineering, by the Government of Canada through Industry, Science, and Technology for the entire degree program and the Saskatchewan General Proficiency Award, from the Saskatchewan Government, based on her academic standing in1993.
Dr. Misra’s research experience includes presentations at numerous national and international research meetings on advance laparoscopic techniques and metabolic surgery. Currently she is working on projects regarding bariatric surgery and type II diabetes.
In addition Dr. Misra has been the program director for numerous educational programs at the Center for Minimal Access Surgery. These courses were designed to teach surgeons, residents and nurses advanced and innovative techniques in surgery.
Dr. Misra’s professional affiliations include: the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Canadian Medical Association, Ontario Medical Association, Canadian Medical Protective Association, Canadian Association of General Surgeons, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice president, and finally President of The St. Joseph’s Hospital Medical Staff Association in 2010.
Dr. Misra’s experience is lengthy and spans over 13 years. She has DaVinci Robotic Training Certification, Basic and Advanced Laparoscopic Skills Course Certification, as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
Dr. Misra’s varied interests extend beyond surgery; she has been featured on a Television Series on the Life Network and Discovery Health Channel - Examining experiences in training of McMaster medical students and residents, 2002, 2003, 2004. As well, she has given Professional East Indian Semi-Classical Dance performances all over North America over the past 20 years.
